Mantis

Sitting outside in the late Autumn sun I didn’t even notice this little green dude as he somehow made his way out onto my forearm.

He finally snagged my attention with fore-claw air guitar semaphore and some sort of funky Mantis beat-bobbing.

I watch his dance moves for a bit, amazed when he stops and carefully cleans his legs, turning his little triangular head around to look at this and that.

The word umwelt was first used by zoologist Jakob von Uexkull in 1909 to describe the unique lived (or perhaps better, felt) experience of an animal.

How do you see this world Mantis dude?

He bobs a little in mysterious reply, so I gently relocated him to a nearby plant and snap this pic as he reaches down to touch a red leaf.
