Every time I walk past this jewellery shop I have to stop and stare through the window.
Something about watching a craftsperson or artist at work. Creativity and talent, oftentimes encased within a penumbra of quiet emergence. In the zone.
“No matter what tools you use to create, the true instrument is you. And through you, the universe that surrounds us all comes into focus.”
― Rick Rubin, The Creative Act: A Way of Being
But let’s not forget the tools. Oh the joy of pliers and brushes and vices and drill bits and holders and viewers and anvils and probes and notebooks and manuals and callipers and all the rest. A cornucopia of analogue and electric devices. I know not their names or functions…. but lust after them anyways.
I pull out my camera and a lady inside the shop spots me almost immediately. A scowl and mime that waves me away. The artisan looks up, flashes me a wide grin and waggles his fingers through the flame. Magic. Now that would have made a great shot…but alas, I have been mimed and dare not lift my own tool again.
