After the rain I took my dog Juno out for a pee.
The post storm smells of petrichor and earthy geosmin were thick in the air. Perhaps one of the most wondrous of aromas.
My dog took care of business, and I went back for the camera. To try to capture that smell.
Over by the bird bath. Over by the birch. Water drops raced to the ends of branches before pausing to slowly grow and reflect the whole world.
Then, with a certain uncertainty that frustrated any attempt to capture one freefall, they released to the nadir of their fate.
The smell that reflects the whole world, and is gone. That’s it.
So what exactly is that smell? To describe it is to spoil it. But in case you are curious, here is some science: Petrichor: why does rain smell so good?
