The Martian Embassy

As a 10 year old kid scrunched down in the backseat of our Datsun 180B, it seemed totally plausible, if not probable.

“Keep down kids”, dad warned, “we are driving by the site of a crashed UFO”.

There were not as many buildings around back then. And the copper dome with its row of white lights on top seemed to stick out of the ground with a definite alien foreboding.

“I think I can see someone moving around inside…or some thing!”

Sure dad. I acted all cool and stuff in front of my sister. But I knew I would not sleep well that night, what with the way too likelihood of alien abduction.

The slightly less probe-worthy truth is that this building is called ‘The Shine Dome’ and is part of the Australian Academy of Science. As Canberra is home to Australia’s foreign embassys, it has also been colloquially referred to as “The Martian Embassy”.
Sounds legit to me.

On 1 December 1956, the academy’s building design committee met in Adelaide to look over plans submitted by six architects. The plan accepted involved a 710-tonne reinforced concrete dome, which had to be supported by 16 thin supports. The concrete is approximately 60 cm thick at the base supports, and 10 cm at the top. The dome supports itself, with no internal wall holding it up. It cost £200,000 to build.
