Here is a recap of my favourite photos over the last month. I am now feeling much more comfortable using my camera and rather than thinking about settings, Im thinking more about how to best get a story out of the photo.
Things like:
- Layering
- Leading lines
- Subframing
- Geometry
- Exploring angles
- Using negative space
There is a great explanatory video of these concepts here.
I often don’t get the result I am imagining I will achieve (bugger!), and sometimes the results surprise in other interesting ways.
Here are my picks (click to enlarge):

I am also learning not to overthink the whole thing and not to expect every photo to be some sort of profound candidate for a Time magazine cover.
Sometimes it’s just simple everyday stuff. Its about the process not the result.
My take away tip is….if you want to adopt photography as a hobby you only need to do 2 things:
- Carry a camera.
- take a lot of photos.
