I used to come to Echo Point. Back in the day.
Back in the day when there was just some simple (slightly sketchy) concrete and wood lookouts. You are way WAY up above the forrest floor. Spectacular vertiginous views sweeping out into the Megalong valley.
If you were lucky there was this guy busking with his didgeridoo. You could not ask for a more perfect soundtrack.
I liked to walk down from our hotel. At night. In the winter. There was often thick fog filling the abyss. And leaning into the fence at the lookout edge, and then way over, well….wow. You couldn’t see it but you could smell eucalypt far below, and hear strange far off night sounds, and you could feel the drop, in your balls.
But now it’s not the same.
The place is over developed. Maximising tourist flow.
The didgeridoo is long gone, but there is a gift shop. Wilsons parking have blanketed the surrounds charging a criminal 3 bucks for every 15 minutes at a place that used to be free. A place that demands you spend some slow time soaking in the ancient views and exploring the many walks into the Valley.
And the coaches roll in and out with just enough pause to grab a couple of selfies and a fridge magnet.
Today I payed 24 bucks for the rebar reinforced experience…. and my balls felt nothing.
