Short review: The SELPHY CP1500

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

A little bit ago I wrote about the reasons that I was considering buying a small printer for my photography.

I purchased the Canon Selphy CP1500 and have been using for about a week now. The unit is about the size of two thick novels ( 13x18x5 cm) making it super portable and it prints out postcard size photos (148x100mm) on good quality photographic paper.

Each box of 108 sheets at around $47 AUD comes with a couple of ink cartridge units that will provide just enough ink to cover those prints.

What about the quality of the prints then?

Well…. the printer uses a dye sublimation print technology, and each print passes in and out of the printer 4 times as color layers are added at 300 dpi. Pretty cool to watch this happening. As the print is finished, it is instantly dry, smudge-free, and water-resistant.

So far, I have found the color prints very good, although they do have a slightly vintage look, and some of the skin tones have been a little on the pink side (you can alter the color grading in the settings…but I have not ventured there yet).

But …black and white photos (and most of my prints are monochrome) are fantastic. Zero complaints.

Having actual tactile photos to flip through and shuffle and scribble on the backs and spread out on the dining room table and non-digitally share is really nice. Better than nice.

For me it brings back a whole deck of Kodak memories, yet sadly, there are probably plenty of people who have never had the experience of reviewing their photos other than by scrolling thru glass.

A week in and Im giving this printer an 4.5 out of five star rating. Definitely recommend.

Are you giving 3.5star rating (as per stars at the top of the article) or as per words at the end of the article?

  2. Was interested to see your review. Heard very mixed reviews on small photo printers including the white lines and green tinge to photos on Selphy. The life/age of dye sublimation prints is also a concern. But, I now have an excuse to go and buy one to test it out. Ian told me I could……… 🙂

Different but relevant – my kids bought me a Frameo digital frame so I can view my favourite pictures and they can send pictures to the Frame. I love it.
