Things that evoke a soaking sadness.

Perhaps there are two types of sadness.
Sadness that you soak in.
And sadness that you drown in.

Here are some examples of the first type:

  • Faded plastic flowers on a grave.
  • Old rock stars.
  • Roadkill.
  • Hearing your first ‘our song’ unexpectedly.
  • Standing in the supermarket isle trying to figure out which brand of eggs inflicts the least suffering on the hens.
  • Boredom on a cold rainy day.
  • Loss.
  • Overtly struggling small country towns.
  • Solitary poker machine regulars.
  • Old family photos in second hand shops selling for 50 cents each.
  • Jaded, cynical nurses.
  • Plastics washed up on a beach.
  • That runner in last place.
  • The final scene in the movie ‘Dances with Wolves’ (don’t judge me).
  • Leaving that old faithful broken lawnmower at the dump.
  • Performing last night of the show.
  • Watching someone running to miss a bus.
  • Symphony No. 3, Op. 36, (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs) by Henryk Górecki
  • A single balloon floating away.
  • Shopfront cardboard bedding in winter.
  • Watching someone look alone in a group.
  • Old dogs with cataracts.
  • Revisiting a glacier.
  • The last 10 pages of a good book.
  • People who are sad.
