Another waypoint close to where I live.
This site was pretty much unmissable. Just off the side of the road the tree was surrounded by cards and flowers and other objects. There were a lot. And these things were constantly being replaced and tended to.
At some point everything has been removed, leaving this simple cross on the tree.
This may have been a choice made by the family/friends of Tyson. Or it may have been a decision made by our local government.
In Canberra, the local government has policy and guidelines with respect to setting up and maintaining roadside memorials: Roadside and Urban Open Space Memorial Policy (pdf).
Roadside memorials can be placed in a suitable location on a permanent basis subject to them being maintained in a tidy and aesthetic condition that poses no hazard to the public in the view of Roads ACT. The ACT Government will remove roadside memorials that pose a safety hazard or are not maintained. Roads ACT will endeavour to contact the relatives of the deceased person prior to the roadside memorial being removed unless it poses an urgent safety hazard to the public.
