Black and white photo of small Kangaroo looking directly at the camera.

Kangaroos on the streets.

We used to joke that people overseas probably thought we had Kangaroos just jumping around on our streets.

These days it is more fact than joke. Probably due to a multitude of factors including population pressure, food and water scarcity, and human encroachment on habitat, I am seeing kangaroos increasingly active in local streets and parks.

Last week, whilst walking my dog, we passed a group just chilling under a tree just metres from a main road… and then a little further on, a huuuuuuge male sprawled out on the grounds of a primary school.

Judging by the volume of kangaroo scat I see on the ground during my walks, at night they must ranging be everywhere!

I worry about the multiple bad potentialities at the intersection of ‘Roo and suburbia.
The sheer volume of road kill on show validates my fears.

But nevertheless, there is something….I dunno, from a spirit-animal perspective?…whatever, there is something reassuring about having them in our midst.

  1. If Juno is like my dog, Oscar, then skippy scat is “c’est délicieux.”

  2. We are currently in Japan ( jelly much?) and have frequently been asked about koalas in our backyard. They are disappointed when I say no but cheer up when I mention the local mob of kangaroos I see on my morning walk.
