Two small statues of first Australians sitting playing the didjeridoo. In the background is a large sign saying 'sovereignty'

Sovereignty.

SOVEREIGNTY: Supreme power or authority. Jurisdiction, supremacy, dominion, power, ascendancy, suzerainty, tyranny, hegemony, domination, sway, predominance, authority, control, influence, rule.

The Aboriginal Embassy has stood in front of the old Parliament House for a long time now. Ever since 26 January 1972, when four First Nations men set up a beach umbrella on the front lawn to protest the rights to their traditional lands since British colonisation.

The day I took these photos, the place looked abandoned. No people, no campfire smoke, no protest; all of which have been a given over the years. The place looks shabby and dilapidated, and a fence has been erected around the perimeter.

What happened? Did I miss something?
Has the site been finally shut down?

There has been much money poured into the rejuvenation and beautification of the surrounding rose gardens and tourist areas.

To be sure the Aboriginal Embassy stands out as an uncomfortable, complicated eyesore amidst the cultivated power of the parliamentary triangle. It has been a gritty reminder.
