Black and white rules.

I decided to up my photography skills by setting myself a challenge. To make it more interesting there will be rules.

  • One black and white photo posted each day.
  • All photos are to be taken using my cameras viewfinder. No using the screen.
  • Camera set to ‘greyscale’ mode. When I look in the viewfinder… WYSIWYG1.
  • Take one photo of each scene/subject. No shooting off multiple photos (spray and pray) hoping one will accidentally turn out OK2.
  • No peeking at any photos until the end of the day3. At that time the most interesting photo is to be selected and the rest will be deleted. A clean slate for the next day.
  • Don’t overthink it. This is meant to be fun. The exercise is all about learning to look in greyscale…and to see the art in the world.
  • Minimal editing4.

  1. WYSIWYG = what you see is what you get. Most photographers recommend shooting in colour mode and then desaturating to greyscale afterwards with editing software. I like the idea of ‘seeing’ the scene in B&W realtime to get an idea of the picture ↩︎
  2. Most of these rules are to simulate using film, which I like the idea of…but developing film is expensive ↩︎
  3. ditto…half the fun is in the waiting to see how the photo turns out….just like with film ↩︎
  4. There are plenty of advanced editing apps such as Lightroom that also have pretty advanced subscription fees. I use a more modest (but capable) app called Polarr ↩︎

Help fuel my creative mojo.
Shout me a coffee.

  1. Love it! Curious: what created the feathery-book-leaf shadow at the top of the picture? Linda x

    1. The ring and chain are hanging down from a metal sculpture…..that is casting the shadow.

      1. Wow, because the shadow at the top is so soft compared to the metallic shadow. Fabulous! xx
