50 cents worth of mixed lollies please.

Sweet nostalgia. If you know, you know.

On the way to school. 2 for 1 cent.
  • Caramel swirls.
  • Freckles
  • Milk bottles
  • Black Cats
  • Redskins
  • Musk sticks
  • Pineapples.
  • Mint leaves.
  • Green/Red frogs
  • Bananas
  • Clangers
  • Fantails
  • Jaffas
  • Aniseed rings
Morning break
  • Warm Milk. Small glass bottle with gold or red foil bottle-tops (often used as tiny frisbees to flick at girls). Milk was delivered in crates that were left outside the classrooms. Sometimes it curdled.
School lunch.
  • Lunch orders written on large white paper bag first thing.
  • Paper bags arrive in large wire basket carried by the ‘lunch monitor’.
  • Devon and tomato sauce sandwich (wrapped in baking paper).
  • Vegemite and butter sandwich (wrapped ditto).
  • Space Food Stick (or perhaps a Jupiter Bar)
  • An apple.
  • A Sunny Boy or a Glug or a Razz
  • Jam donught.
  • Chocolate Moove.

Have I forgotten anything?

  1. A Pie and sauce……possibly about 25c but maybe I’m remembering with Rose coloured glasses.

  2. It all sounds utterly foreign to this American. 😉 Especially the warm milk mid-morning break!

  3. @shojiwax.com Those frozen triangular orange flavoured ice blocks I've forgotten the name of (also came in pineapple and chocolate, and those were like straight sugar).

I want to know what people's utopia you used to live in that had aniseed rings at 2/1c – they were 2c each and you felt lucky you weren't paying 5c.

  4. How could you forget Cobbers? Hard sticky bits of caramel covered in chocolate, guaranteed to remove a wobbly tooth.
Warm school milk is the reason I don’t drink milk now ( except in tea).
A big favourite at our tuck shop was a finger bun with pink icing and coconut on top and those “healthy” apricot delights.

Thanks for walk down memory lane.😄

      1. … and a parquet floored hall to sit on and munch lunch when it rained.

Did anyone mention meat pies – sausage rolls for those less affluent among us – with lashings of tomato sauce?

I still miss those space food sticks – they stopped producing them just after the 2000s.
