The last fire of Autumn drops its ember leaves.
Lantern lights as
Persephone descends
casting a wake of grain
and grey
and cold
and sleep.

The Greek myth of Persephone involves her abduction by Hades, the god of the underworld, which marked the transition from summer to winter.
As the daughter of Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, Persephone’s descent into the underworld signified the end of summer.
Demeter, heartbroken by her daughter’s absence, would withdraw her blessings from the earth, causing crops to wither and leading to the onset of winter.
Persephone would return each spring to reignite the world in a ceaseless cycle of bounty and decay.
