Coronavirus: time to store a little extra food.

Over the last few days Kelly and I have been buying a few extra non-perishable food supplies each time we shop.

Simple things like:

  • Tins of beans and vegetables.
  • Powdered milk.
  • Powdered potato (Deb)
  • Pasta & rice.
  • Instant noodles
  • Soups (instant and canned)
  • Sauces and spices.
  • Canned tuna.
  • Treats (biscuits, chocolate etc)
  • coffee/tea
  • Soap and toothpaste etc.
  • Dog food.

Whilst it is still not clear how this COVID-19 virus will pan out, it does seem more likely now that it will soon be classified as a pandemic and begin to have increasing (and as yet uncertain) impacts on our day to day lives.

I don’t know if our food production/transport chains will be impacted or if social isolation measures of some sort will be necessary, but it does seem prudent to take some basic steps to prepare.

Now is the time to do this. Avoiding any future food shortages long queues, or panic-buying situations by simply adding a few extra items each day is a sensible response right now IMHO.

We already have a small supply of P2 masks left over from the recent bushfire impact.

Our goal is to build a stockpile of food that we could ration out over 4 weeks if necessary. But we are not going to go crazy about it. As I said, just a few extra items each time we go shopping.

  1. Great thinking. Already, hand sanitizer out of stock at my local Coles.
Living in Darwin in the 80s , I woke up after night duty day sleep to a cyclone alert.
    Local woolies completely empty !!!

  2. I thought the same thing and I figure the canned items will always come in handy when camping, hopefully prudence will not be necessary but it makes sense to start adding a couple of extra items to each shop just in case.
